  1. The Holy Bible ~ this is not always an easy book to read and I don’t understand a lot of it, but my spirit connects with it. It’s foundational to my life and faith. My favorite books are Psalms and John.♥️🙏🏻🌿
  2. The Peace of Wild Things by Wendell Berry ~ this collection of Berry’s poetry speaks to me deeply. It makes me consider time and future generations in a huge way. It makes me think of now. It makes me consider life outside of self. Our lives have meaning for a greater purpose!
  3. Jane of Lantern Hill by L.M. Montgomery ~ my handle online is Amy of Hearth Ridge directly inspired by this book. There’s something to be said for hoping to be useful and a blessing to someone else in your life. How living a selfless life actually is fulfilling. Beautiful story of a daughter and father’s restored relationship bringing healing to those around them.That home keeping can be art.
  4. Wives & Daughters by Elizabeth Gaskell ~ I can’t begin to tell you how much I love the characters and journeys they go through! The father-daughter, mother-daughter, father-son, and marriage relationship studies in this Victorian novel are fantastic. This is a beautiful story!
  5. Persuasion by Jane Austen ~ a lovely story of redemption and finally being able to have a voice. How one can live kindly and generously in the wake of S.S. Selfish People. 🚢
  6. Home Education by Charlotte Mason ~ late 1800’s to early 1900’s British revolutionary educational philosophy. This is so very Christ-centric and focused on the personhood of children and mothers. A beautiful life-giving read.
  7. Understood Betsy by Dorothy Canfield Fisher ~ a lovely story of how a child can blossom under loving and listening caregivers.
  8. Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury ~ a father and son meeting evil together face on! Underlying themes of temptation, fear, and growing older! I’m due for a reread!
  9. Christy by Catherine Marshall ~ beautiful story of a young teacher’s growth and learning in a rural Appalachian school. Gorgeous lessons for her as the very people she came to ‘help’ grow her so much in return. Wonderful female friendships embodied!
  10. The Long Winter by Laura Ingalls Wilder ~ the sheer bravery and strength of the early pioneers is astounding, convicting, and so inspiring! I often reevaluate my complaints after rereading this one. 😨♥️

  2. When I was in 3rd grade my teacher read “Treasures of the Snow” by Patricia St. John aloud to our class and that book made such an impression on me. I hadn’t read the book ever, I had just listened to it that one time in third grade. This past school year, I got ahold of a copy of it and found an audio version on Audible. We got to a particular scene in the beginning of the story and the whole thing just came flooding back to me. It was crazy. If you haven’t read it, I think you would really enjoy it. 🥰

    1. Gone with the Wind is a fantastic choice! I really loved it! 🥰 I haven’t tried Scarlett. Oh, yeah. I’ve heard of the John Jake’s title! I’m only familiar with Elizabeth Gaskell’s North & South! ♥️😅

  4. Nice list. I never think to put the Bible on a list, although I should, especially since I read from it every day, LOL! I just always think of fiction books for these lists (although I did put a few nonfiction on mine today).

  7. You’re the second person I’ve seen to list The Bible, and I totally agree! I don’t understand most of it either, but I feel that same connection. I also have scriptures that I’ve memorized over the years that live rent-free in my head and bring me comfort and inspiration when I need it. Great pick.

  8. Agreed about Wives and Daughters, I’m rereading it now and it’s so good. L.M. Montgomery would definitely be on my list Jane of Lantern Hill is one I have not read so often, having only discovered it not long ago, but I think it might be one of my favorites.

  9. What a lovely list! I also love the Holy Bible and Persuasion, and I am looking forward to reading more by L.M. Montgomery after loving the Anne of Green Gables series. 😊 We did very different things with this topic! 😅

  10. Ten Books that live Rent free in my head:

    1. Bible (I grew up and still love and use the KJV…and especially love Alexander Scrouby reading it!)
    2. “Anne of Green Gables” series (Can I list an entire series? — well I did, am)
    3. “Dune” by Frank Herbert
    4. “Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen
    5. Mary Oliver Poetry (I think especially “Evidence” and “Felicity”)
    6. “Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” (counting as one since it’s a series)
    7. “Winnie-the-Pooh” by A.A. Milne
    8. “Robin Hood”
    9. “A Separate Peace” by John Knowles
    10. “Sherlock Holmes”

    Oh! The horror of only picking ten! I couldn’t pick one book out of the series I picked because I feel like the whole series has impacted me and I keep coming back to the series as a whole and re-reading them. This list was super hard…

    Some books from my childhood still roam the halls of my mind…like “Heidi”, “A Little Princess”, “The Secret Garden”, “Little Women”, “Pollyanna”, “Protector of the Small” Quartet, the “Christy Miller” series, so many biographies, etc. BUT I decided to keep this list to what is shaping me still and what I still re-read as an adult.
