Non~fiction Mood {Day 88}

Hi friends ~ I’ve been reading a lot of fluff (and enjoying it!) this year, probably due to our life circumstances 🤪, but a nonfiction switch has been flipped in my mood-reader brain, and so I hope to share about my favorites slowly. I’m still reading fiction, of course 😆, but I finally picked up this one which has been on my radar for long time!

The Radium Girls – I decided to read the Young Readers Edition to preview it for our homeschool. So far, it’s been super engaging and disturbing! 😳 Did you know about this part of history?

Another super disturbing and eye-opening book that my friend recommended is this one!

The Opt-Out Family ~ I can’t stop thinking about this one and I’m currently deeply evaluating 🤔 how I live with and my example to my children in using technology, specifically social media and video games. 🙃😱😩😖 Still not sure on everything, but prayerfully considering it all. I keep using Covid as an excuse for the level of media we use and I recently realized that, duh, we are going on that being like 6 1/2 years ago. 😨☠️

Do Something Beautiful for God ~ I’m a Protestant, but I value and appreciate so many of the great Catholic writers. I’ve been so pleasantly surprised by this book of daily quotes from Mother Teresa. I started it in the middle of the year last year and it has blessed and spoken to me time and time again.

How about you? Any nonfiction hitting you hard? What’s on your stack? ♥️✨

  1. I read Radium Girls years ago and it was devastating to read but interesting for sure. I’ve gravitated toward more non-fiction this year as so many novels I’ve tried have felt so shallow. Just gotta stick with a lot of classics it seems. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    1. Yes, I did piece it! A friend had a big arm quilting machine and quilted it for me! 23 + years ago for my wedding! The binding didn’t hold up the greatest, but I still love the colors!

      That sounds a wee bit sloggy! 😖😱 I struggle with those! Are you one that holds out to the bitter end? 🤣😅

      1. Amazing! 🤩 I love the colors of your quilt too!

        I don’t always read until the bitter end but this book was recommended to me by two people with more life experience than I have, and I really respect them both, and they have never met each other and are in totally different circles. So I feel like I really ought to finish it. I’m actually reading it a little out of order. I read the first section, skipped to the end, and now I’m slogging through the middle! 😂

  2. Recent nonfiction reads I recommend include The Spiral Staircase by Karen Armstrong – the story of her life after leaving a convent, struggling to find a profession while coming to terms with her undiagnosed epilepsy and her relationship with God…in the process of writing her surprise bestseller, A History of God. I’ve read some of Armstrong’s other books, but not A History of God, and now I really want to.

    I also enjoyed The Victorian and the Romantic, but Nell Stevens, though I prefer the UK title, Mrs Gaskell and Me. It’s an unusual blend of non-fiction (memoir about her project to write about Gaskell for her PhD while navigating a doomed relationship) and fiction (imagining Gaskell’s visit to Rome, the man she apparently fell in love with there, and the impact this doomed relationship had on her). It gave me a whole new perspective on Gaskell’s work, especially the later books, and set me off on a reread (now in the middle of Wives and Daughters).

    I’m always thankful to find a book that helps me learn something!
