I have really enjoyed joining in with the annual appreciation of Miss Austen’s life and work by reading and watching various things by Austen or inspired by! I’m getting closer to finishing my reread of Sense & Sensibility. Lucy Steele is quickly becoming another all time villain in my book. Ha. I love Austen’s character studies! I’m still plugging away at Jane Austen’s Bookshelf. I identify with the author’s bookish love and really appreciate her personal stories of why and how she feels connected or on the flip side, uncomfortable with a book/author. I don’t love the modern spin author’s try to eke out of classic writers by trying to twist the little bit they know using their modern lenses. Romney sounds a touch whiny sometimes, but it’s at least limited to the hardships female authors had to face in the 18th century, which were true. She’s not, so far, trying to read into Austen or these other authors’s personal lives and make things up.
Overall, it’s a compelling read and I’m enjoying it.
Other things I read and did in honor were watch the 2020 BBC Emma adaptation. While I liked parts of it, unfortunately, it wasn’t my favorite. I reread The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, which I really enjoy. Samuel Taylor Coleridge was a contemporary of Miss Austen’s.
I also read Sarah E. Ladd’s The Governess of Penwythe Hall, which was so enjoyable as a Regency-era story. Georgette Heyer Regency novels (love!) and Amish Pride & Prejudice (don’t really recommend! 🤣) by Ashley Emma rounded out my Austen-inspired reading. 📖 Sigh. ☕️🫖♥️🌿✨

Do you enjoy Austen? What is your favorite by her? ♥️🌿✨
Persuasion. Second chances are fulfilling.

I borrowed Jane Austen’s Bookshelf from the library and only made it through the Ann Radcliffe bio before the book had to go back. I started a few years back researching and reading the favorite authors and books of my favorite authors – so I love the idea of this book! LMM has a few too that I discovered. 😊

I quit Lucy Worsely’s Jane Austen at Home, just didn’t love the author’s speculations on people’s lives, wanted more about her books etc. I have enjoyed Jane Austen: A Life in Small Things by Paula Berne? I also enjoyed a Jane Austen Education by William Deresiewitz?
Overall, I’m enjoying Jane Austen’s Bookshelf!

Yes exactly! The speculation is a bit obnoxious and the feminization from some modern others is frustrating. 😒 I’m like, just tell us the facts and move on! 😄

Pride and Prejudice, for sure.

That sounds like a fun way to celebrate Jane Austen. I completely forgot about this month being Jane Austen themed (Yet, I ended up celebrating anyway)! I will try to remember next year so I can be more intentional…as I also greatly enjoy Jane Austen. This month I did re-watch the 1996 Kate Beckinsale version of “Emma” (with my girls) and the first episode of “The Other Bennett Sister” with my friends (I enjoyed it! I had to look past one annoying thing but otherwise low on agenda’s pushed). I am now just starting the book because I don’t intend to pay for the episodes (especially when I can get the book free on Kindle unlimited).

I loved The Other Bennett Sister book, but I don’t have a way currently to watch the show! It’s good to know that it seemed generally enjoyable! ♥️

We watched the first episode free on Roku (didn’t need an account or anything).

P.S. Hard me to chose…either “P&P” or “Emma” (since I did name one of my daughters after “Emma”). I love the wit of Elizabeth and the overall story plot…genius, but the sarcasm of Mr. Knightley is simply perfection. I think, overall “P&P” wins by a hair!
So, my order would probably be 1. “P&P”, 2. “Emma” 3. “S&S” 4. “Persuasion” (though I thought the movie adaptation was horrible)

The newest movie Persuasion? I didn’t even try it! It looked horrible! 😆I especially like the older one with Ciaran Hinds?

Well, it is the older version (yes, the Ciaran Hinds one) which I really didn’t like. Sorry! I didn’t know there was a newer “Persuasion” movie.

There’s at least 2 newer I think! 🤔 Sorry you didn’t like it! I love it because it felt similar to the book. There’s one with Sally someone? and Rupert-Perry Jones? That one is fine , very different! I like the unique filming style in that one, some of my kids hate it! 😅There’s a VERY new one where I think Anne is drunk? or drinking a lot. 😂😬

Well, I think I will check out the one youentioned (not the one with a drunk Anne….)

I’ve honestly never read a book by Austen (gasp… I know… I hope we can still be friends! 😂). I have seen several of the movies though! I will be reading “Pride and Prejudice” for my 50 x 50 challenge! 💗
