The smell coming out of our public library was intoxicating! πβ₯οΈ
I really enjoy this app and that they make Saturday a time of spiritual reflection over the past week. β₯οΈππ» I highly recommend listening (you can listen on their website, too!)
I jotted down their questions this week and found it so refreshing and challenging to honestly pray through them. Itβs sobering to deeply examine oneself in the light of our Lord!
Does the LORD take pleasure in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the LORD?
Look: to obey is better than sacrifice, to pay attention is better than the fat of rams.
Novelist Katherine Anne Porter wrote, βHuman life itself may be almost pure chaos, but the work of the artist-the only thing heβs good for- is to take these handfuls of confusion and disparate things, things that seem to be irreconcilable, and put them together in a frame to give them some kind of shape and meaning.β
βThere are lots of things to see, unwrapped gifts and free surprises. The world is fairly studded and strewn with pennies cast broadside from a generous hand. But-and this is the point-who gets excited by a mere penny?β
βIt is dire poverty indeed when a man is so malnourished and fatigued that he wonβt stoop to pick up a penny. But if you cultivate a healthy poverty and simplicity, so that finding a penny will literally make your day, then, since the world is in fact planted in pennies, you have with your poverty bought a lifetime of days. It is simple. What you see is what you get.β
~Annie Dillard, Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, p. 17, emphasis mine
What pennies are lying around just waiting for us to pick up? βοΈππ₯°βοΈπΏπ
Heartache comes in spoonfuls all day long. You get used to heartache, I suppose, because you know there just might be a hallelujah around the next bend.
The LORD then said to me, βYouβve been traveling around this hill country long enough; turn northβ¦
For the LORD your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He has watched over your journey through this immense wilderness. The LORD your God has been with you these past forty years, and you have lacked nothing.β
I was so inspired Chantelβs DIY Literature Degree that Iβve been thinking about how to incorporate something similar. Iβve been feeling the pull (again) to be purposeful about certain areas of my life. I need some home education, spiritual, and life inspiration! I put together a stack of books to pull from, resources, and habits to especially focus on this summer. Iβm sure this will extend far beyond 3 months π, but I love sharing in case it encourages/inspires someone else and as a bit of accountability for me. Firstly, here are some of the books. I am going to be dipping into these, and/or finishing, or rereading. My Bible and Fire Bible notes are a biggie as well plus various devotionals I dip into!
~ Formation of Character by Mason (life/ home learning)
~ Learning All the Time by Holt (home learning)
~ Get Your Life Back by John Eldredge βοΈ
~ Women by Edith Stein ( spiritual/creativity/life)
~ The Cloud of Witness by various (ongoing)
~Slowing Time and Motherprayer by Mahany (spiritual/life)
~ poetry from different poets (spiritual/life)
~Know and Tell by Glass (home learning) βοΈ
~ Real Learning Revisited by Foss (life/home learning) βοΈ
~Pilgrim at Tinker Creekby Dillard (nature/life) βοΈ
~Jane & Dorothy by Marean Veevers
Some of these are on my Summer ABC list too, which works well!
Our last co op Picture Study artist! Fascinating!
The next area is my health. Iβve been floundering a bit in the program I was in and have gained a lot of weight back. I prayed about it and talked with a few close people and made some modifications. Iβve started back in and am feeling hopeful. I am prioritizing getting outside/walks, drinking water, trying to sleep, journaling, healthy food, and a biggie is limiting social media. I also have to have margin around our busy summer schedule. The key to these things is just a little bit everyday. I know it sounds like a lot, but Iβm keeping it VERY simple to set myself up for success. ππ»β€οΈβπ₯

Lastly, I really want to focus on real life relationships. I have a lot of people here at home and around me that I want to pray for and keep in touch with. Soooo, Iβm focusing on s-l-o-w mediaβ¦like penpals, this blog (it takes me a lot of work to post as Iβm working from my phone), and an occasional reading wrap up on Booktube (super slow because itβs a lot of work to film and edit)! This means I wonβt be around Instagram this summer, and limiting how much Booktube I watch! I have plans to connect with church and local homeschool moms this summer and Iβm excited and a good nervous. π Iβve been seeing that I need to break some covid-era dependency on online friends. Not that Iβll forget them entirely, my Victorian Reading friends through Kate Howeβs Patreon are dear to me! π Iβm really focusing on reading aloud to my younger kids and dates with my hubby, too.
Recent library picture books that we loved! π₯°
How βbout you? How is your summer shaping up? If you could create a DIY degree for yourself, what would it be? Iβd love to hear! Chat below! πβ₯οΈπ‘πΏπππ
Iβve been thinking, praying, and starting to research/plan for our next formal home-learning year. Itβs so fun to pull off treasures from the pastβ¦ahem, books my older kids loved and share them with my youngers. We had so much fun listening to this old Jim Weiss retelling of a few of the fables plus thereβs a few other stories for another day. β₯οΈ

I also have a learning project that I will post about later, but for now, these are ones Iβd love to pick up sooner than later! Iβll come back and cross off as I finish and hopefully I can chat a bit about the ones that really spoke to me. Even if it takes me the rest of the year thatβs ok, too. What are excited to be learning, reading, doing this summer? πβ₯οΈπ
Today so far Iβve: read my Bible/journaled while sipping black coffee from my lovely π₯° pastel thrifted woodland creature mug, read some things Iβm studying (more about my DIY Womenβs Well Refresh later, hopefully), sent a reminder email for our local momβs homeschool group, listened to Studio Ghibli soundtracks, took a short walk among the cool morning sunshine while listening to Magyk by Angie Sage audiobook (Iβm loving it). I took a shower and dug out a comfy sweatshirt because itβs chilly today, I made myself a breakfast of plain yogurt, banana, cashew butter, cinnamon, and oats! I supervised children doing their maths and found sweatshirts for little kids planting the garden with their 15yo sister. I talked about dyeing things with dye made from dandelions and tried to figure out what to cook for meals today since the stove is getting a little TLC. I sent three older βkidsβ off to various jobs, one having to borrow my van, because a car battery needed jumping. I talked about drawing books, schedules, and What is Poetry? by Michael Rosen with various family members. My 15 yo and I talked about how we can secretly make my hubbyβs favorite mint bars for his upcoming birthday. I helped same child find wrapping paper for her gift. Iβve been praying and finalizing the book discussion, Scriptures, and end of year stuff to share with my mom friends tonight at the last meeting, I ended up dumping potatoes in the Instapot for a baked potato bar lunch. Iβve been listening with (thankfully) an amused heart to a recorder being played upstairs. Iβve been putting books on hold to read aloud and for planning our new home learning year. Iβve been digging into this blog for all her WONDERFUL inspiration and resources. Iβve been listening to this and something is stewing in my heart to share in my next article for Sisters of the Wooden Spoon. Iβve been reevaluating my health and my media usage, setting up accountability for bothβ¦
And itβs noon, now. πβ₯οΈ Time to return to this wonderful life Iβve been gifted, lunch, and the Winnie-the-Pooh audiobook, Pictures of HollisWoods, On the Banks of Plum Creek, and narrations. I think Iβll cook some sausage on my pancake griddle π€£ and put taco soup in the crockpot for dinner.
I share this because Iβm just SO grateful for life and I love reading about other womenβs days. πβ₯οΈ Bless your Tuesday. Iβd love if youβd share below your day! ππΏ
